Sunday, February 19: Signs
John 9:1–41
In John 9, we are introduced to a man born blind. Presumably, he has been begging by the temple for a long time. Everyone in Jerusalem seems to know his story, and a theological debate has arisen at his expense: Who sinned that he was born blind, him or his parents?
The only life this man knows is begging as he overhears people discuss his plight, until one day Jesus walks by, rubs some mud in his eyes, and tells him to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam.
The man goes, washes, and comes back seeing!
Now, you would think that the man lived happily ever after. How amazing it must have been to regain his sight after a life of blindness! But unfortunately, since Jesus healed him on the Sabbath, regaining his sight was just the beginning of his problems.
I think many of us can identify with the man born blind. When our eyes are opened to the truth of the gospel, we want to share it with everyone. But not everyone receives Jesus with the same joy that we do, and often we can experience hostility for our faith.
What do we do in these instances? How do we react when people reject us for our faith?
Jesus tells us, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” (John 9:39 ESV)
Not everyone is going to see Jesus for who He is, and following Jesus often means being misunderstood or rejected. But we are not alone!
Join us this week as we look at the man born blind and talk about how to keep our eyes on Jesus when the world around us doesn’t recognize him for who He is.
See you Sunday!
Service times are at 9:30 & 11:00. If you can’t make it in person, you can watch live at those times.
