John 1:35–51
St. Augustine once said about the Gospel of John: “It is shallow enough for a child not to drown, yet deep enough for an elephant to swim in it.” This is certainly true of John 1:35–51!
In the latter verses of John 1, the evangelist recounts the story of the calling of the first disciples. On the one hand, it is a straightforward story. Andrew, Philip, Simon, and Nathanael leave their former lives and follow the man dubbed “The Lamb of God” by John the Baptist. They don’t yet understand who Jesus is, but they are impressed enough by the testimony of the Baptist to find out more. Jesus admires their faith but promises them that they will see even more impressive things in their time with him.
On the surface, John 1 is straightforward. These waters are shallow enough for a child. But, if we slow down and reflect on the dialogue, we begin to see how an elephant could submerge itself in them. “What are you seeking?” Jesus asks us in verse 38. “What are you seeking, really?”
Join us this week as we dive into John 1 and discover how our eyes can be opened to the God at work all around us. In the words of Jesus in John 1:39, “Come and you will see!”
See you on Sunday!
