John 14:1–14

On our way back from visiting my parents in Virginia this past summer, my family got off the plane at SeaTac and one of my kids said, “I love the way Washington smells.”

I agree. I had thought it, too.

I don’t know if it’s the evergreen trees or what, but the Pacific Northwest has a distinct smell to it. It’s the smell—of home.

I like to travel, but perhaps the best part of travel is the feeling of coming home. Our homes give us a sense of security, a sense of belonging, a sense of peace. There is nothing quite like that feeling of coming home after a long time away.

In John 14:1–14, Jesus reminds us that, while we have earthly homes that give us a small sense of peace, we also have a true home with God. Facing his imminent crucifixion, Jesus did not want his disciples to despair after losing him. He says, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:1–2 ESV)
Jesus died to bring us back home to God.

This week, we are going to hear from Jesus in John 14:1–14. Not only are we going to see that our true home is with God, but just as important: we are going to see how to get to that true home. There are a lot of ways out there that claim to be the path to life, but they are all dead ends. Only Jesus is the true way to life. He’s gone before us and he’s calling us home.
