“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 ESV)

Is there a better verse in the whole Bible? Probably not.

Psalm 23 is arguably the best-written piece in western literature. It’s simple. It’s vivid. It’s profound. It reassures the frightened and you probably want it read at your funeral.

In his commentary on the Psalms, John Goldingay writes about Psalm 23, “The life of a member of God’s people is lived between unfettered enjoyment of the presence of God and . . . the precariousness of life.”

In other words: “God is with us. Life is uncertain.”

Psalm 23 holds these two together. In life, we are guaranteed to experience evil. But we don’t have to fear evil.
