Sunday, November 6: One

Ephesians 3:14–21

What do you want to be when you grow up? No, I don’t mean what kind of job you want when you get out of school—I mean what kind of person do you want to be as you grow older? Do you want to be more joyful? More content? Wiser? More patient? What kind of person do you want to be?

Well, God can get you there.

This week, we are continuing our sermon series on Ephesians. The Ephesian church consisted of Jewish and Gentile Christians who were struggling to get along, so Paul encouraged them to live in harmony as “one.” The book can be divided into two parts: the first three chapters about our being “one” with Christ, and the last three chapters about living as “one” body.

This week, we will be finishing chapter three. Before Paul transitions to the practical section of the book, he tells the Ephesians that he is praying for them in 3:14–21. Paul’s prayer is that they might grow to maturity—that the Spirit might strengthen them to love like Christ, that they might better understand God’s love for them, and that they might be filled with the fullness of God.

In other words, he prays that God might make them the people they want to be when they grow up.

We all want to grow up. We all want to be spiritually mature. This week, we are going to talk about how. And we’re going to see (SPOILER ALERT!) that it has a lot to do with the power of the God we serve.

See you on Sunday!
