Sunday, March 3: Moses
Exodus 3–4
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”
And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
(Exodus 3:14)
And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
(Exodus 3:14)
Last week we left Moses in bare feet, standing in front of a shrub burning with the presence of God, when the Lord said, “I have seen the suffering and oppression of my people and I want you to go back to Egypt and tell Pharaoh that his vast, non-union labor force is no longer available.”Remember how Moses answered? “Who am I? I’m the guy with the baggage. I’m the guy with identity issues. I’m the guy who killed an Egyptian. I’m the guy who washed out. I’m a loser and a failure. Who am I that you should call me to do this?”
I love God’s response. “I know all about that, but I’ll be with you.” In other words, “Who are you, Moses? You’re the one who has God with you.”
When you stop to think about it, that changes everything, doesn’t it? If God is with me how can I fail? But Moses doesn’t stop to think about it. After all, he’s still talking to a shrub and before he goes to back to Egypt to convince the Hebrews that they should join him on the suicide mission of a slave rebellion, he wants a little more information.
So, Moses asks a question and the Lord reveals to him one of the most profound truths in the Bible. It’s not about Moses. It’s not about who he is. It’s about God. It’s about who HE is. See you on Sunday.
