Joshua – Joshua 1:1-9

Sunday, April 19: Joshua

Joshua 1:1-9

Do you know who Jarrett Stidham is? (No cheating with an internet search.)

I’ll give you a minute.

With Tom Brady departing to play quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jarrett Stidham is currently the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots.

I feel bad for that guy! Imagine stepping in to replace the key piece of a football team that won 6 Super Bowls in a 20-year stretch. Talk about pressure!

This is the situation Joshua found himself in, taking charge of Israel after the death of Moses. Deuteronomy 34 says about Moses:

And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.” (Deuteronomy 34:10–12 ESV)

This Sunday, we are starting a new sermon series on the life of Joshua, the man who lead Israel after the death of Moses. We know Joshua for many things: the battle of Jericho, praying for the sun to stand still, and leading Israel into the Promised Land, but the question that hung over Joshua’s head his whole life was:

Could he fill Moses’ shoes?

It turns out Joshua’s story is about more than just battles and solar anomalies. He is also a model of humility and faithfulness, of perseverance and doing the right thing. Join us online this Sunday (live at 9:00 AM and re-broadcast with live comments at 10:45) as we launch this new study on the life of an amazing guy!
