Sunday, October 11: Follow Me

Mark 9:30–50

In Mark 9:30–50, Jesus and his disciples are traveling through Galilee when Jesus says to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” (Mark 9:31 ESV) It’s a somber moment.

When they get to Capernaum, Jesus decides to create an awkward moment. He asks his disciples, “What were you guys chatting about on the way here?”

Things get quiet.

They don’t know what to say.

They had been arguing about who was the greatest.

Jesus’ mind was on service. It was on sacrifice. He was facing a terrible death for others. The disciples were arguing about who was more awesome.

Knowing that the disciples still had a lot to learn, Jesus called a child over and stood him in their midst. Normally, this child would have gone unnoticed, unless to tell him to be quiet or go away while the grownups talked. But in this instance, Jesus makes the child the center of an object lesson. He says, “If you want to be the greatest, you must become like a child—a servant to all.”

It was a lesson the disciples needed to learn and it’s a lesson we still need to learn.
