Sin

In Romans 7:15, Paul writes, “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

I think we can all identify with those words on occasion!

We all want to do the right thing, but more often than not we find ourselves drawn toward doing what we know is wrong.

Why is that? What is wrong with us?

This week we will be continuing our sermon series on Doctrine by talking about the Scriptures’ diagnosis for what is wrong with the world—sin. We will be in Romans 7, the central passage in the Bible for the human dilemma. In it, Paul talks about the Law of Moses—why God gave it to us and why it was ineffective at accomplishing its purpose. In it, we find out that humanity has a problem—cosmic forces are at play in the world, pushing us away from God. These forces have even infiltrated our very hearts so that there is no part of us immune to its effects.

Now, this all sounds very discouraging (it should!), but we aren’t going to end with sin. We’re going to talk about sin because understanding our dilemma helps us better understand and appreciate our need for Jesus. At the end, we will transition to Romans 8 and see God’s wonderful gracious solution to our problem!
