Sunday, November 29: Baptism

Matthew 28:18–20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Signs, symbols, markers, and sacraments, are all ways that we describe a thing that points to another thing. Understanding what the purpose of each of these helps us understand what they are communicating. There’s an obvious difference between a sign-post that says, “Oil Change this way” and a symbol that says “stop.” There are even differences based on the context in which we find a sign.

If you kneel down in front of a friend, they’ll probably think you’re tying your shoe. But if you kneel down in front of a romantic partner, while in a beautiful location, and you happen to have a ring in your hand, well that’s a different story all together.

Similarly, baptism points towards a reality that is greater than the action of jumping in a pool.

We remember our baptism this week, as we celebrate the baptisms of our brothers and sisters. Join us as we welcome them into new life!
