Sunday, October 17: The Parables

Luke 12:13–21

Among the many vices known to man, Greed is perhaps the most prevalent and the least recognized. That’s not a quote from anybody famous, just an observation. It’s easy to see when someone is under the affect of gluttony, or wrath, or lust, but greed usually flies below the radar.

We recognize the concept, and that it’s bad, but when you say “greed” the image we get is anything from royalty and billionaires to the monopoly man. It’s certainly not often that we say out loud, “I’m struggling with greed.”

As we continue our parables series this week we hear from Jesus as he addresses an unexpected question about material wealth. Although the parable is not very complex, it’s application has always been relevant. Stop focusing on accumulating treasure here, focus on storing up eternal treasure. That’s the point of the parable.

In a time in history when both prosperity and inequality are as pronounced as they have ever been, it’s not hard to see why this parable would be relevant. The difficulty is being honest enough to apply it to ourselves.

Even though we’re going to be talking about money, and for some reason people don’t like to hear what Jesus said about money, I hope to see you this Sunday anyhow.
