Sunday, February 5: Signs
John 8:37–47
If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “He’s a chip off the old block” or “He’s his daddy’s son” you know that context is important. Just accomplished something incredible? Compliment. Just fell-tripped over your own two feet? Probably not a compliment. In either case, the idea is “You’re just like your father, and you do things like he did.”
This week Jesus is talking to a group of people who claim to be sons of a pretty important father, Abraham. He’s known for his faithful, God-fearing behavior, for his obedience to God, and for his willingness to receive God. He’s a pretty great guy, and it’s a pretty great legacy that they’re claiming to be “a chip off of.”>
However, they’re not really living in an Abraham sort of way, and Jesus points out that they’re not actually much like that daddy at all. They’re doing things that are pretty far from how Abraham acted, and in fact the block that they’re “a chip off of” is a very different, and very bad father.
This week we’ll see Jesus point out that your spiritual lineage is demonstrated by the things that you do. That when we live and move in the world, we are showing people just which block we’re a chip off of, and just whose son we are.
Join us this Sunday as we talk about spiritual lineage, and how we show folks who our dad really is.
See you Sunday!
Service times are at 9:30 & 11:00. If you can’t make it in person, you can watch live at those times.
