Sunday, October 8: Champs & Misfits
Hebrews 9:15–10:18
A question is sometimes raised about the Bible, at least in the last few decades, if not before: What is the deal with all the blood? Have you ever wondered about that?Judaism has been called a “slaughter house religion.” Christianity has been ridiculed as the “Gospel of Gore.” That may seem unfair until you think about some of the songs we sing.
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:
Fountains and floods of blood! Really? We have to admit it sounds bizarre. We also have to concede that the O.T. sacrificial system would have caused PETA to go ballistic. During the 1000 plus years of the Mosaic Covenant it has been estimated that were more than a million animals sacrificed. During the Passover a trough was constructed from the Temple down into the Kedron Valley for the disposal of blood. In other words, they had a plumbing system for the blood!Read the Bible and there is blood everywhere – from Genesis 3 to Revelation 19. Someone has said, “Cut the Bible anywhere and it bleeds.” Why is that? This week the writer of Hebrews will tell us. See you on Sunday.
