Glory – John 21:19–25

This week we are wrapping up the book of John and as we learned last week, chapter 21 is
more of an epilogue to this wonderful story. Last week we left off with Peter and Jesus having
this conversation filled with forgiveness and assurance.

This week’s passage wraps up John’s book, and we are left with more words from Jesus to
Peter.

“18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you
wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by
which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” (John 21:18-19 NIV)

The words “Follow me” are directed to Peter, the disciples, the readers, and even us as Christ
Followers today. We all have the command to “Follow Jesus.”

Peter has not necessarily had a clean track record of doing that… He’s failed in many ways.
This week’s sermon shows us yet another lesson Peter must learn if he is to be the Shepherd
Jesus calls him to be.

For us, what does it look like to “Follow Jesus”? Our journeys as Christ’s followers are unique
because we are made unique by the Creator. Our life stories of following after Christ should fill
pages with wonders of His love and no two stories will look the same.
