Last week, we talked about life-giving cultures and death-dealing cultures and concluded that the church is called to steward a life-giving culture in all that this means. I also teased that this week we would be talking about parenting.

The world is changing. Recent decades have shown the rise of the “nones” (those who check the “none” box in the religion section of the census) and more recently the “dones” (those who have burned out and left the church) as greater proportions of our population. The church does not enjoy the same central place in society that it had 70 years ago. Len Sweet likes to say that when it comes to cultural engagement, “The church used to have home court advantage. Now every game is an away game.”

How do we raise children in a post-Christian culture? How do we raise children when we are a minority, counter-cultural movement?

The people of God are no strangers to hostile cultures. In Deuteronomy 6, Israel was about to enter the Promised Land, where they would find themselves inundated with idols. God needed to prepare them for what lay ahead, and so He gave them instructions on how to keep their children’s eyes on the Lord.

We are stewards of a pro-life culture and we are called to set our kids on the pathway to life. Join us this week as we talk about what that looks like.
