Sunday, August 30: Underdogs
John 4:13–15
will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water
that I will give him will never be thirsty again.
The water that I will give him will become in him
a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water,
so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
Jesus’ encounter with an unnamed woman at a well is packed full of surprises. A woman out for a drink of water when the well should be cleared, instead finds a man there hoping to talk. While the poor, thirsty woman probably doesn’t want to have a stop and chat with a strange man, it turns out Jesus is not who she thought he was. It turns out his desires aren’t what she anticipated, that he isn’t bound by the cultural expectations that she expected of him, and that instead of trying to get something from her, he offers something to her that she didn’t know was possible.
Safe to say the expectations that the woman had for this interaction are not what Jesus has planned. As is often the case, Jesus introduces the supernatural into the mundane. Our concerns with the immediate are often opportunities for God to usher us into the infinite.
Join us this week as we reflect on Jesus’ interaction with a woman who was just looking for a drink of water, and instead found eternal life.
