Some of you might remember an old song from the 60’s: He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands. Don’t try to sing it or even hum it. It can drive you crazy if you can’t get the tune out of your head.

It’s not the best song ever written, but as Christians that’s what we believe. Our God is the creator and sustainer of our little spinning island in space and we believe he is sovereign and Lord over every square inch of it. He’s got the whole world in his hands.

Sometimes, however, if we’re honest, we look around and see all that’s wrong in the world and we wonder if God is in control. After all, we live in a treacherous world of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires and floods, and human catastrophes caused by bigotry, racism, conflicts, hatred and war.

Taken all together I’m reminded of a disturbing line in another song from the 60’s sung by the Kingston Trio: what nature doesn’t do to us, will be done by our fellow man.

So, we wonder, is God really in charge and where do we find security in such an unsafe world? It turns out that a song written three thousand years ago tackles both questions. See you on Sunday.
