Sunday, August 6: Who is This Man?
The Suffering Servant
Lord of Hosts. Bright Morning Star. Good Shepherd. These are a few of the many wonderful names for Jesus found in the Scriptures. He’s also known as the:
Wonderful Counselor
Alpha and Omega
Mighty God
Emmanuel
Messiah
Prince
King
Lion
Man of Sorrows
Wait. “Man of Sorrows?” Really? That doesn’t sound so wonderful. It also doesn’t seem to fit with the other names. Nevertheless, seven centuries before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah wrote an astonishing chapter in the O.T. concerning Messiah. In it he introduces the Suffering Servant as “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” (Isaiah 53:3)Who is this Man? If you look at Jesus and all you see is the “Wonderful Counselor,” then you are not seeing the full picture. If you look at Jesus and you miss that he is also the “Suffering Servant,” a man of sorrows, then you are not only missing his mission but what this means to us. See you on Sunday!
