Sacred Spaces is a series in which we’ll consider the ways that the world is full of the presence and majesty of God. It can be easy to get into a routine that prevents the intrusion of God in our lives and it can be easy to forget to be still and know that He is God. To that end we’ll be joining together in a series designed to make us more aware of the majestic, creative, and often unexpected presence of God.
Our series will include an introductory class explaining the ideas and disciplines we’ll be undertaking, a daily devotion, and a 24-hour retreat where we’ll practice these ideas in a gathered community.
We’ve made participation in this series as “bite-sized” as possible. If you can participate in a daily devotional, we’d love for you to follow along with us, reflecting on the ideas you encounter there. If you can also join in a nightly review of where you saw God at work based in part off of the “Examen” (which will be explained in detail in our introductory class), we’d love to have you join us in that as well. Finally, if you’re able, you’re also invited to attend a 24-hour retreat at the All Saints Camp and Retreat Center on Raft Island where we’ll be putting some of these ideas into practice and where you will receive further teaching. More information and reminders will follow as we approach the start of each of these events. You can also click on the titles of each event for more details. The dates and times are as follows:
May 7th: Introductory class describing the Sacred Spaces series
We’ll be discussing what this series is about, the role of spiritual disciplines in the Christian life and how God’s word informs our practices. A review of the class is available in handout form (Click Here), and a review of the “Examen” is available as well (Click Here).
May 8th: Daily Devotions begin
Available online (Click Here), as well as in small booklet format (Check with Jeremiah Hinton or call the church office)
June 16th – June 17th: Retreat on Raft Island
From 5:00 p.m.on the 16th to 5:00 p.m.on the 17th we’ll be practicing intentional community, reflection on scripture, and spending time with God. A sign-up sheet is available in the foyer for this event.
This series is ultimately designed to be a re-orientation towards a posture of awareness of, and gratitude for, the presence of God in our lives. However much you’re able to participate, we look forward to joining with you in the common goal of a deeper appreciation of the sacred spaces in our everyday lives.
