I heard some funny lines on the radio awhile back. There was a long list, but I was in the car so couldn’t write them all down. By the time I stopped I could only remember three:

• If at first you don’t succeed; skydiving is not for you.
• If you eat a live toad first thing in the morning, nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.
• It may be that your sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.

The last line, in kind of a back door fashion, introduces the topic we take up this week in our study of Hebrews. In the second chapter we come to the first of five warnings that we find in the letter.

On five occasions the writer takes a timeout to warn his readers of danger. The reason is because he has a pastor’s heart. Because he loves his friends in some places he’s really tender and in some other places he’s really tough. In this case, he wants to wave them off from the danger of a drifting life. But it’s a warning wrapped in kindness. See you on Sunday.
