In John 13:31-38, Jesus tells His disciples that He is leaving and that they can’t come with Him. As always, Peter speaks up first and insists that he is ready to die for Jesus. But Jesus won’t hear it. He warns Peter that he isn’t as committed as he thinks he is and that he will deny him three times before the rooster crows.

I don’t know about you, but I like Peter. I like that he’s a man of action. I like that he’s not afraid to do bold things. I’m encouraged by the fact that even one of the pillars of the early church did dumb things and often put his foot in his mouth.

But I also like the way Jesus treated Peter. He knew what He was getting into when He appointed Peter as the early leader of the church. He knew Peter had some rough edges. But He also knew that Peter had a big God who was able to smooth some of those edges. Over time, Peter grew a little less brash and a lot more loving. Typical Jesus!
